To support a student studying nursing leadership at the graduate level.
Origin
This award is funded by a bequest received from the estate of Dorothy Wylie and donations made to the Foundation in Dorothy’s memory.
Honoree Background
Dorothy Wylie has been recognized as a leader in the nursing community within Ontario and across the country. As a renowned teacher, mentor, coach and visionary leader, she was committed to education, learning and to the advancement of nursing practice.
Dorothy was an RNFOO Board Member from 1999-2003, and was instrumental in developing new systems to strengthen RNFOO as a revitalized and evolving charitable organization. She made significant contributions in communication, through the newsletter and laying the groundwork for developing RNFOO’s first web site, and in finance through new systems and structures that strengthened the work of the Board. Dorothy was presented with an RNFOO Honorary Life Membership at the Gala in May 2007.
Dorothy was well known as a teacher, mentor, coach, volunteer, risk-taker and friend to many. She held leadership positions at Scarborough Centenary Hospital, Sunnybrook Medical Centre, and the Registered Nurses Association of Ontario before her appointment as Vice President, Nursing at the 1000 bed Toronto General Hospital, the largest hospital in the country at the time. Dorothy served as Associate Professor in the Faculty of Nursing at the University of Toronto and Assistant Professor at the University of Manitoba. Dorothy is a former President of the College of Nurses of Ontario, a founding member of both the Ontario Provincial Nurse Administrators’ Interest Group and the Canadian Journal of Nursing Leadership.
The establishment of the Dorothy M. Wylie Health Leadership Institute with the Canadian Nurses Association was, in Dorothy’s mind, the greatest tribute to her and her career. At the Institute, carrying on Dorothy’s vision, current and emerging health care leaders work to accomplish core leadership competencies appropriate to leading current and future staff in complex health care organizations.
