The Janet Anderson Scholarship was established in her memory by her family and many friends and colleagues in late 2019. The scholarship recognizes Janet’s numerous achievements and contributions to the nursing profession in Ontario.
Honoree background
Janet was committed to continuing education and quality in nursing care for herself and others, and had a passion for mentoring and creating supportive work environments. She loved music and was a wonderful singer and member of the York Region Community Choir for decades.
Janet’s academic accomplishments included a Nursing Diploma from Ryerson Polytechnic Institute (1982), a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Ryerson University (1988), and a Master of Education in Workplace Learning and Change Focus from the University of Toronto, Ontario Institute of Studies in Education (2002).
Janet’s long career in nursing ranged from clinical practice to education to administration. She demonstrated her leadership ability early on in her career and held several clinical leadership roles including at the Wellesley Hospital, Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre and Community Care Access Centre. She excelled as an educator in her clinical roles, and later taught students at Ryerson University for several years.
In 2003, Janet joined the College of Nurses of Ontario where she held a variety of positions including Manager of Practice, Manager of Quality, Director of Professional Practice and, most recently, as Chief Quality Officer. In that role she provided leadership to all of the College’s regulatory functions, advancing the College’s internal commitment to continuous quality improvement at the same time as pursuing opportunities to enhance the provision of safe nursing care in the province.
Janet passed away on October 9, 2019 after a brief but brave battle against cancer.
