The Annual Gala of the Registered
Nurses' Foundation of Ontario (RNFOO) took place on Wednesday May 7th, 2008.
Thanks to the untiring efforts of RNFOO President Dorothy Ferguson and Gala
Chair Sue Munro (photo left), and Gala Committee members Heather Campbell,
Linda Cooper, Rosanna Di Nunzio, June Duesburry-Porter, Sara Lankshear,
Claire Mallette, Janet Roberts, Peggy White and Cindy Alexander, more than
500 nurses and guests, representing major hospitals and institutions across
Ontario, were in attendance. RNFOO handed out $75,000 in awards and
scholarships to an outstanding slate of candidates who were given a standing
ovation as they were ceremoniously piped in by Brian Beatson.

Under the leadership of
President Dorothy Ferguson, the number of awards has increased by 50%.
In addition, Dorothy, who had a scholarship named in her honour in 1997
upon her retirement from St. Joseph’s Hospital, Toronto, demonstrates
her leadership and commitment to RNFOO by donating her annual award of
$2,000 towards a Registered Nurse with outstanding leadership potential.
The gala dinner is an
opportunity to acknowledge those who received this year's awards and
scholarships, and to honour those who have given their time and talent
to the furthering of the mission, vision and values of the RNFOO.
Beverley Simpson was given a
standing ovation as Shirley Avery presented her with an Honourary Life
Membership.
Beverley is a long time
supporter of RNFOO and was President of RNFOO from 2000 to 2002. In her
remarks Beverley noted the enormous contribution of volunteers who,
despite their busy professional schedules, ensure the success of RNFOO
both as a giver of funds and as a receiver of donations. In this way the
sustainability of RNFOO funding opportunities is ensured.

Chatting with the crowd and
emphasizing the importance of funding for nursing education were Past
Presidents: Sue Williams, Beverley Moir, Beverley Simpson, Ann Hawkins
and Shirley Avery with current President Dorothy Ferguson.
Sue Munro, Gala Chair,
recognized the importance of corporate donors in her remarks, noting
that these gifts and partnerships are an essential aspect of the success
of the gala. See the

corporate sponsors. Sue aptly turned the
attention of the guests to raffle numbers, and silent auction
opportunities. The excitement grew as guests collected their prizes and
made their bids on the auction items. At the end of the evening Sue
thanked the guests for their generosity and noted that over $10,000 was
raised through the raffle tickets and silent auction items.
